Rumput Kipas/Grass Fan or Selaginella tamariscina (Beauv) Spring

1. Name of plants

In Indonesia, Selaginelle tamariscina plant has local name rumput kipas (Hutapea, 1994).

2. Classification of plants

3. Morphology of Plant
Spherical stem, clayey, fork-shaped branching or form a fan without secondary growth and green. The leaves are single, dealing, composite march, along the stem shape of the needle with 1-2 mm length and green. This plants have sporangium that reduced, found in the axillaries, greenish white while the fiber appear from the stem like sticky roots and brown. Grass fan has habitus herb, creep, little upright. Round stem, clayey, branching like a fork, without secondary growth and brownish white. Single leave, arranged in line around the stem, dealing, 1-2 mm length, smooth, and green. Spore from of the sporangium reduced in axillary and white. Root fibers, appear from the leafy stems and blackish brown (Hutapea, 1994).

4. Spread of Habitat
A wild plants on the outskirts of the forest or cultivated as ornamental plants, in 10 m untul 1.500 height above the sea level. Collecting material can be done all year. (Hutapea, 1994).

5. Chemical Ingredients
Selaginelle tamariscina plants reported that contain of saponin and glycosides (tanaman inventaris obat indonesia). Butanolik extract Selaginelle tamariscina reported that contain 3β cholesterol, lutein and four component flavonoid there are Amentoflavone, Cryptomerin B, Isocryptomerin and Hinokifalvon (Shin, 1994). Selaginelle tamariscina also reported contain  flavonoid 2′,8″ biapigenin (Rhan-Woo, 2006) and (7S, 8R)-7, 8-dihydro-7-(4-hydroxy-3,5-dimethoxyphenyl)-8-hydroxymethyl-[1'-( 7'-hydroxyethyl)-5' methoxyl] benzofuran-4-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside (tamariscinoside C), D-mannitol, tyrosine, sikimat acid (Zheng, 2004).

6. Benefit of Plant
This plant efficacious for urinary tract infection drug and fever (Hutapea, 1994). Moreover Selaginelle tamariscina also efficacious for cancer chemoprevention agent (Rhan Woo,2006) and cancer theraphy (Lee, 1996).

7. Anticancer Research
The research mention  that Selaginelle tamariscina can trigger the apoptosis in Human Leukemia cell (Hun Ahn, 2006) and decrease cell proliferation from gastric cancer cell  (Nishikawa, 1999). Moreover also state that Selaginelle tamariscina as inhibitor COX-2 and iNOS (Rhan Woo,2006) and inhibit phospholipase Cγ1 (Lee, 1996).
